I ran in to a local musician I know last knight. He and I got to talking about the music scene here in Orlando and the music business in general. And that’s when I heard him say the magic words “You don’t need a record label to make music.” So, I explained to him the way SNAFU has been operating over the past few years. Making our own albums, getting indie film makers and volunteers to help make music videos, creating our own events like F!TheMan etc. And that’s when it dawned on me. This really has become the reality of what the music business is today.

When we started this project back in 2009, the D.I.Y. concept wasn’t new. But most bands that applied this concept still had the same end game of eventually attracting a major label. So, when I’d tell folks “SNAFU didn’t want to be signed”, it was always met with skepticism. As if we’d be dumb not to take an offer to sign with a label or that we’d change our tune if offered the right amount of money.

However, now when I tell folks that SNAFU doesn’t want a label, everyone seems to be in agreement. It’s refreshing to see the old-school way of thinking about the music industry begin to shift. It’s the type of revolution I always dreamed would happen. Sure, there will always be big time artist pushed out by major media conglomerates. And some of those artist my be great, like Adele or something. But most of the time they will suck or be subpar, because the record label’s bottom line is a quick return on their investment and not the development of an artist for the long term.

That’s why this serge in D.I.Y. music is great for both Musicians and music fans. Now we have a choice other than what the major labels try to cram down our throats. The D.I.Y. scene is growing and thriving like never before. Of course few D.I.Y. artist will get so huge that they’re straight up ballin. It’s not the same glamorous party like a rockstar type occupation of yesteryear. It’s much more real then that. This new D.I.Y. revolution has little room for those only seeking riches and bitches. This is a revolution of real musicians making real music for the right reasons. And I’m proud to be a part of it.

So life as we know has taken leaps and bounds. (every generation can say this) But at my day and time, I have watched video game systems go from 8 bit from atari to nintendo 64 bit , then….playstaion to xbox to ps3 to xbox 360 and …your head just exploded there. really , cause now i can interact with something so small as a phone through touch screen. (watch some Miami Vice and see what a cell phone looked like back in the day).

I love my Phone, it is a small little computer that makes my life easier every day and moment. take some fun video on the iphone. take that video and put it on your computer. easy enough, but wait. OMG it’s sideways. can I rotate it to fit to facebook video. YES, buy our converter and it will work. Thank you, but no thanks. the world I live in sucks when it comes to making a profit. there are sooooo many different video/audio codecs to have for playback…. they differ for profit. no one sticks to one simple format that works for everyone. …well they did back in the day, it was an record, an 8 track, a cassette tape, a cd, and a dvd.

I spent some of my time (wasted time) tonight trying to rotate an iphone video.
I give up. Codecs Suck! and if you have the awesome fix to the this…..still ask yourself, why so many codecs?
